War Walks : Liberation Day - Hour by Hour

Be there on Guernsey’s First Liberation Day on 9th May 1945. Relive those moments in a blow by blow, minute by minute account of freedom, after five long years of Nazi German Occupation.
Discover the players, from the fanatic German Commandant to the no nonsense British Brigadier. Was it true? It nearly didn’t happen? Was there really a bold plan to take the islands by force if the Occupiers resisted? What would have happened.
Follow the trail of those men who were first ashore, listen to the King’s proclamation on the steps it was first delivered. See how St Peter Port was full that morning, everyone waiting with baited breath as the ships sat outside the harbour. Hear the stories of names that would become local legends - Force 135, Operation Nest Egg and of course how to get ashore the smallest landing party of all called ‘Operation Omelette’.

St Peter Port with Captain Bryan, Privateer

Bold deeds of Derring-Do in the 1700s drove Guernsey's acquisition of wealth. Brave and heroic men like Captain Bryan of the Privateer Papillion carried his Letters of Marque that enabled him to act for the King in capturing enemy ships and their prizes. But only for those who had reckless courage and a desire for action, then the rewards were considerable wealth.
Captain Bryan has a few days of shore leave and would love to show you St Peter Port of the late 18th Century, when America has chummed up with Louis XVI's France and the shipping in the Bay of St Malo is just ripe for the picking.
The Captain is an avid reader of 18th Century Naval stories such as Hornblower and Delancy, and he loves sailing too. In a previous life when based in Chad flying small single engines float planes he was Commander Bryan. So commanding a 1779 Privateer in St Peter Port is an easy task. Want to find out how?
Discover the Treasures of Herm

Over the last 2,000 years the little island of Herm has been home to a whole host of different groups and individuals.
From Monks to Princes, and from Writers to Smugglers, and many other notable residents, each with their own fascinating stories and backgrounds.
Come along for a tour of the island, where we explore the landscape and its hidden secrets, and learn about some of the characters who have called this small island home, where they lived, and what became of them.
The tour takes 2.5 hours and involves walking the length and breadth of this gem of an island.
Victor Hugo & Henry Tupper

This Tour around St Peter Port follows in Victor Hugo's footsteps, with his friend and Jurat Henry Tupper (who advised Hugo on local matters as he was writing 'Les Travailleurs de la Mer'). Tupper was responsible for Guernsey's own Telegraph service, which Hugo used. Learn too about Bailiff William Le Marchant, an accomplished judge, noted for his corruption on matters of self interest.
Hugo was associated with politics, writing and of course ethical values. He lived in Guernsey during his exile from France finishing his famous work 'Les Miserables' and composing others. This Tour is available in English and / or French. Contact your Guide for further details
Delightful Stroll with Victor Hugo

Imagine, if you could. Well picture this...
Meeting Victor Hugo and going out for a stroll with him. It is the 1850s in St Peter Port and you are invited to come and join Victor for a walk through the charming streets of St Peter Port - many of which have remained unchanged for over 160 years.
Victor, who fortunately speaks only English for this walk, would be delighted to share his insights and reveal some fascinating aspects into his life when he was the French Romantic Author, Poet, Human Rights Activist, Political and Hero of France. I think you will love to get to know him.
It is estimated that two million people came to his funeral. So quite an amazing man and well worth spending a couple of hours with him to understand why he upset Napoleon III (Louis Napoleon Bonaparte, Emperor of France) and also the Lt Governor of Jersey. Victor is waiting to tell you....

Discover St Peter Port's Town Church

A one-hour tour that looks at the Town Church from the time the original Chapel, Sancti Petri du Portu Mari was gifted by Duke William of Normandy (later William the Conquerer), to the Abbey of Marmoutier in 1048. Since then the Town Church of St Peter Port has gone through many turbulent times.
From the French invasion of 1294, where women and children were dragged out and slaughtered, to the condemnation and dreadful execution of the three Guernsey Martyrs in 1556. From the signing of the Papal Bull of Neutrality in 1480 to the German Occupation of the Channel Islands in World War two. The town Church was the centre of island life.
Let's look at the history of the Church, how and why it was built, what the surrounding town looked like, and the major renovations of the 19th century that saw the Church close for three years. Take in some of the fascinating memorials which line its interior walls, depicting many who made Guernsey their home.
